Democratic Ink

A reflection on the 2005 elections in Ramadi, Iraq

Panel 1: Voters in line

Democratic Ink colored her thumb blue.
Pride, this day, beamed from smiles in the Wild West.
Our eyes met, I saw humanity, too.
Freedom to choose, maybe, freedom to rest.

Panel 2: Woman's gaze

The collection of Liberties:
Freedom of Expression, to protest.
Freedom of Thought, to think.
Freedom of Press, to write.
Autonomy the right to self-governance.

Panel 3: The mark of ink

Taken these for granted, my own privilege.
Only, by virtue of where I was born.
Tragedy is, though, without this knowledge,
my freedoms, ultimately, may be torn

Panel 4: Silent soldier

I said no words that day.
I gave them space to practice.
I watched with pride.
I witnessed history.

Panel 5: Watchtower

Regardless of the border closing down.
Despite the limited curfew hours.
Notwithstanding the traffic bans in town.
Our troops stand guard in high-armored towers.

Panel 6: Blue thumb raised

Ink is proof they are no longer oppressed.
Victory in Al Anbar; Wild Wild West.
